Local Volunteer Named Humanitarian of the Year 2007

The Community Foundation of the Ozarks announced its choice for 2007 Humanitarian of the Year today. KSMU's Jennifer Moore reports.

The foundation presented the Humanitarian of the Year award to longtime area volunteer Marie Prater. She has spent the last 40 years working behind the scenes at various charities across the Ozarks, and is best known for her work with the Kitchen Foundation, an endowment fund which raises money to feed the poor and the homeless. Prater and two of her friends created the Kitchen Foundation in 1994.

Ms. Prater received her award with the humility befitting of a true humanitarian.

Gary Funk, President of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, says Prater was chosen because of her devotion to feeding the less fortunate and helping them get back on their feet. He hopes the award will inspire others to become involved as well.

Prater echoes those sentiments.

This was the 18th year for the foundation to select a Humanitarian of the Year. Along with the honor, Prater will receive a cash award of 5000 dollars, which she intends to donate to various charities.

For KSMU News, I'm Jennifer Moore.
