Special Olympics Coming to Springfield

The Statewide Special Olympics is coming to Springfield. The organization recently announced that the Summer Games are going to be at Missouri State University for 2008 through 2011. KSMU's Jana Greer reports.

The Special Olympics is a year round program for children and adults with mental disabilities. The State Summer Games is the program's largest event. Mandi Mueller is the Coordinator for Special Olympics. She explains why Springfield was chosen to host the games.

There will be about 2,000 athletes participating in the games. Some of the feature competitions include aquatics, power lifting, soccer, and track and field. Mueller says the Olympics play an important role in the lives of people with disabilities.

Mueller says the Special Olympics organizers are looking for volunteers.
