This evening at 7, you'll have the chance to listen to a presentation from a nationally recognized expert in child development.
Dr. Berry Brazelton will be in Springfield from 7 to 8:30 at First and Calvary Presbyterian Church. He's best known for his books on topics like discipline, calming a fussy baby, toilet training and sibling rivalry.
Dr. Brazelton is also the creator of Touchpoints, an approach to helping parents better understand and encourage the development of their infants and young children...Through Touchpoints, parents are empowered by working with individuals who provide care to the child: for example doctors and daycare providers.
Dr. Brazelton recently spoke with KSMU by phone. We asked him to give an example of a Touchpoint.
Dr. Brazelton says helping parents understand what's behind their baby's behavior could reduce child abuse.
As for the issue of discipline...Dr. Brazelton says there's a difference between discipline and punishment. And he says children need their parents to set limits.
