Construction for New Power Plant Underway
Construction gets underway for City Utilities of Springfield Southwest Power Station Unit 2.
Springfield voters approved a bond issue in June to allow a second coal fired power plant to be built.
The new power plant is expected to be completed in 2010.
KSMU's Christy Hendricks takes us to the site of the new plant.
Inside City Utilities' Southwest Coal Power Plant you hear the workings of massive equipment providing power to Southwest Missouri.
More sounds will be added as the Southwest 2 Project gets underway.
Mark Viguet is the director of marketing and communications at City Utilities.
He says things will begin to get busy as the new plant is built next to the existing one.
Scott Miller is the associate general manager of electric supply at City Utilities.
He says C-U has begun to award contracts, some with local developers, others with companies as far away as Japan.
Miller says the plant so far is on budget.
It will cost nearly 700-million-dollars.
Scott Miller says the big equipment and supplies will arrive at the site through various means.
A turbine generator, for example, will come from Toshiba in Japan.
Miller says about 25 City Utilities jobs will be added for the new plant.
He says when hundreds of workers come in from out of town, it will benefit the whole community.
Bryan Feemster is the plant director at the Southwest Power Plant.
He says more than 20 concrete caissons have already been installed as part of the foundation for the 513 foot tall concrete chimney.
Feemster explains the caissons looking down from a vantage point 160 feet above the ground.
Mark Viguet, the CU marketing and communications director says the new plant will add 300 megawatts per day to the existing plant which provides 195 megawatts a day.
He says City Utilities will be updating the CU website to include time lapse photos, as well as Frequently Asked Questions, and other material.
