Missouri State Professor Translates Buddhist Text
A Missouri State University professor recently published a book he translated from an ancient text.
KSMU's Christy Hendricks explains why this text is unique.
A religious studies professor from Missouri State University recently published a Buddhist text translated from an ancient language.
Stephen Berkwitz's translated the 13th century text from the Sri Lankan language of Sinhala to English.
It's the first time "The History of the Buddha's Relic Shrine: A Translation of the Sinhala Thupavasma" has been translated to English.
Berkwitz says this text is different from other Buddhist texts because it was written by a Buddhist layperson and not a monk.
Berkwitz says the book contains important narratives for understanding Buddhism as well as insights into the culture of Sri Lankans in the 13th century.
He says he spent over a year and a half in Sri Lanka working on the translation.
"The History of the Buddha's Relic Shrine: A Translation of the Sinhala Thupavasma" can be found on amazon.com and will be at the Meyer Library on the Missouri State campus.
