River Rescue Event Starts Today

On just one Saturday in 2004, and another in 05, volunteers rmoved from sections of the james River, more than a ton of trash, and over 200 tires. The annual clean-up effort is known as the "River Rescue" and this years event unfolds in four phases. Mike Smith has the story:

James River Basin Partnership Exectutive Director Holly Neill says River Rescue 2006 includes a 3 day garage sale,

(June 8-10) proceeds from which will be used to help off set the cost of pumping out septic tanks of homes in the James River watershed; A watershed festival at the Ozark Mill in Ozark Friday June 9th, where people can have fun learning about area lakes, rivers, springs, and streams" Saturday's work day float trip clean up of the James River; And the Beer, Brats, and Bluegrass benefit concert Saturday night at the Ozark Mill.

Once a year, Bass Pro cleans out warehouses nationwide. The result is truckloads of merchandise up for sale to benefit water quality. Doors, chairs, lights, display cases, new clothing, canoes and kayaks are just a few of the items available at this year. A "members only" preview sale will take place on Thursday night, open only to members of the James River Basin Partnership. You can join at the door or contact Melissa Bettes at (417) 836-4847. Adding this aspect to the event helps to increase the Partnership's membership numbers. At the event in 2005, $37,500 was raised from the sale, a portion of which is being used to continue the James River Basin Septic Tank Cost Share Program.
