Retired General Barry McCaffrey will speak at Missouri State University October 11. McCaffrey spoke to KSMU's Mike Smith about his upcoming visit.

General McCaffrey's speech at Missouri State University is part of the Public Affairs Convocation Series at Missouri State.

The retired General will speak on the war on terror and the current situation in Iraq.

In a telephone interview with KSMU Thursday Sept 29th, General McCaffrey said the United States should not hurry the withdrawl of troops from Iraq. He said it will take at least a year from now before Iraqi security forces will be ready.

As to the U.S. mission in Iraq, McCaffrey tells KSMU that he supports the idea put forth by the so called civilian Neo-Cons in the Pentagon of spreading democracy in Iraq and other Arab nations, but he takes issue with the way Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has directed the mission.

Mccaffrey says Rumsfeld is a brilliant patriot, but has bad judgement, and the "arrogance of his position hs led to some bad days". (in Iraq) McCaffery says rumsfeld should've taken the advice of several Generals who suggested the use of

many more troops than were eventually deployed.

General Barry McCaffrey will speak at Missouri State University's Plaster Student Union Theater Tuesday October 11th at 7pm. The event is free and open to the public.
