CBCO To Supply Blood To theMilitary In the Event of War

The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks will help to supplement the military's blood supply if the U.S. goes to war against Iraq. Michele Skalicky reports.

If the U.S. goes to war against Iraq the community blood center of the Ozarks will be ready to help. According to the CBCO the center is coordinating with America's blood centers, a network of community blood centers that collects nearly half of the nation's blood supply, to supplement the military's blood supply during wartime. Don Thomson is executive director of the CBCO'

Thomson says thru the agreement with the department of defense, ABC members will provide blood to the military if and when it's needed. The CBCO will be one of the members providing blood. Thomson describes it as a spoke and hub system'the CBCO is one of the spokes, attached to the hub in Dallas/fort worth at carter blood care--another independent blood center'

Thomson says blood collected here may not go directly to the military, but rather will be part of the national support system that will assure hub centers will have enough blood when it's requested. Thomson encourages everyone to give blood now, even though the U.S. isn't yet engaged in war. He says about 60% of the population is eligible to give blood and only about 5% actually donate'

Thomson suggests those who give blood occasionally increase the amount of times they give'a person can donate up to 6 times a year. The CBCO has been under a code yellow alert for all blood types for several days. Thomson hopes that situation will improve this month, but he says people need to continue to give either at the blood center or at a bloodmobile stop. For information about how to donate call the CBCO at 227-5000.
