Once again, it was standing room only in the Plaster Student Union Theater, as more than 600 members of the SMSU community gathered for a service of remembrance last night. Students, faculty and staff made artistic contributions to the service, with original poetry and music, personal recollections and video clips.
SMSU English professor Jane Hoogestraat recited her poem "A Ghazal in Memory"
Nadhiya Ito, president of the SMSU International Student Association, and a Muslim, recalled her emotions after the terrorist attacks.
Several members of the audience wiped away tears as the SMSU Concert Chorale performed "This is My Song" by Jan Sibelius.
Following the service, the crowd proceeded across campus by candlelight, to the lawn under the Jane A. Meyer Carillon tower. Hundreds of people stood in the mild evening breeze, cupping their hands around their tiny candle flames, as members of the Springfield religious community recited Muslim, Jewish and Christian prayers for peace.
Following the prayers, the candle-lit faces turned upward, as university carillonist Jeremy Chessman performed special music on the carillon.
