KSMU now offers RSS feeds of our content so that you can get the latest news and events from around the Ozarks delivered right to your desktop.

What is RSS?

RSS is an acronym that is often referred to as "Rich Site Summary" or "Really Simple Syndication". Essentially RSS is a distillation of content into a simple format that a program like a news aggregator can read.

With an aggregator you can subscribe to an RSS feed and the aggregator will display the content from the feed in a way that lets you see the headlines and read a brief summary without having to actually visit our site in your browser. If you see something you want to read more about, a click on the headline will take you to our site. Periodically the aggregator will check to see if there is any new content and display that for you. All without your intervention, just subscribe to the feeds you want and browse the content at your leisure.

Most major news organizations like The New York Times, CNN, ABC, MSN, Yahoo, Slashdot and even Google offer RSS feeds of headlines and information. You can find weather and traffic reports, search results, and even blogs are offered as RSS.

Instead of having to visit a hundred sites a day to read all the headlines and news, you can simply subscribe to your favorite feeds and read them in one place.

Just look for the rss button on your favorite sites. Sometimes you will see an xml button instead, this is the same thing; RSS is based on XML, which stands for eXtensible Markup Language.

How do I get Started?

The first thing to do is to download an Aggregator. Here is a listing of virtually all of the different aggregators for all platforms that are currently available, many of the free ones are just as good as the more expensive ones and there are services that will do the aggregation for you and make a personal web page that you can view.

Once you have selected an aggregator, all you have to do is click on the feed links and then copy and paste the address of the feed into your aggregator's new feed dialogue.

Be sure to look at all your favorite sites and see what content they are offering, RSS is a wonderful way to save time and get the most out of the internet without having to spend all day visiting different sites.

You can find out more than anybody would ever want to know about RSS and find thousands of new and interesting feeds at syndic8.com.

And check back often as KSMU adds several new feeds of information and events. If you have any questions or suggestions feel free to contact us or phone 417-836-5878.
