Riding on Trump’s Popularity, Hawley Unseats McCaskill

Josh Hawley gave his victory speech at the University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center after unseating incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill.

It was supposed to be neck-and-neck, but Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley won Missouri’s US Senate seat by a solid margin, ousting incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill.  Early morning preliminary results showed Hawley, a Republican, at about a six percent advantage over his Democratic rival.

Hawley started off his victory speech by thanking President Donald Trump.  Hawley said he spoke with Trump on the phone and thanked him shortly before taking the stage in Springfield Tuesday night.  Trump made multiple appearances at campaign rallies for Hawley in Missouri this fall.

Also in his remarks, Hawley touched on another issue Trump has been touting:  immigration on the southern U.S. border.

“You know, now it is time to roll up our sleeves and to get to work,” Hawley said. “The hard work begins of going to Washington and standing up for our values. I said that I would fight to secure our border and I will.”

Hawley also said he would fight for what he called “pro-Constitution judges” and to bring back jobs from overseas.

Hawley’s watch party was hosted at the University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in downtown Springfield.
