More rain is expected this week after flooding in parts of the Ozarks Sunday night. Meteorologist Rob Frye with the National Weather Service, said 1.66 inches fell at the Springfield-Branson National Airport last night, causing flash flooding. The most rain fell from central Springfield toward Willard and Republic. Creeks rose from their banks, and vehicles were trapped in flood waters on Chestnut Expressway just east of I-44.
"That is a known area that is problematic. It's very low, in fact, it's like a bowl underneath the train tracks there, and water collects there very quickly, and it doesn't take much, apparently only just under two inches in under an hour to really cause some problems," he said.
The area is under a flash flood watch this evening thru Wednesday evening. Periods of showers and thunderstorms are expected starting tonight and lasting thru at least Wednesday.
"At this point it looks like the heaviest rain will be toward the northwest. Generally up in the Nevada area is probably where we're going to see anywhere between three to five. Here in Springfield it looks like generally two, maybe three, but there will be locally higher amounts like we saw yesterday. The northwest part of town got 1.6 where the southeast side of town probably only got around a half inch or so," he said.
Frye reminds motorists never to attempt to drive through flooded roadways.
