The Missouri Department of Conservation reports the number of Black Bears in Southern Missouri is on the rise. Mike Smith has the story:

Missouri Department of Conservation Wildlife Damage Biologist James Dixon will present a program about Black Bears and Mountain Lions tonight at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center. Dixon says his program will mainly focus on Black Bears since their numbers are much larger than the Mountain Lion. Dixon estimates 300-400 Black Bears are in Southern Missouri today.

Dixon says a number of years ago Arkansas began a program to encourage re-population of Black Bears, and that state's efforts are proving productive for an increase of bears here in Missouri as the animals cross the state line and begin to breed here. He says these large animals are creating lots of excitement-both positive and negative-with their return.
