Springfield Fire Department Changes Eligibility Requirements Print E-mail

The Springfield Fire Department is heating things up with a change in eligibility requirements that will allow more people to be considered for the job. KSMU’s Chasity Mayes reports.

 


 

After voters approved the November 3rd referendum for the Police-Fire Pension Fund, Springfield’s Fire Department is finally out of a hiring freeze that started in January of 2009.

The department is also changing some of the requirements for firefighting applicants to expand the pool of candidates.

Fire Chief David Hall, says the eligibility requirements changed so the department would have more options when it comes to hiring staff.

Previously, candidates were required to have both EMT-B and Firefighter I and II certifications. Now, only one or the other is required. Other ways to meet the minimum qualifications include having 36 accredited college hours completed or two years active-duty military service with an honorable discharge.

The Springfield Fire Department is looking to fill 17 vacant positions. Applications are being accepted through 5:00 pm, Friday February 26th. Applicants can apply online at springfieldmo.gov/jobs or in person at the Busch Municipal Building during normal business hours.
