Although the poverty-stricken country of Haiti feels like a world away to most people in the Ozarks, many organizations right here in Springfield are doing their best to help out during a natural disaster. KSMU’s Chasity Mayes has more.

Kids Against Hunger is just one of several local groups trying to make a difference in Haiti. Today, 140,000 of the well balanced meals Kids Against Hunger is known for, were sent to humanitarian organization Convoy of Hope to be shipped to a country consumed by crisis.

Karen Wood, director of Kids Against Hunger says the best way for people in the Ozarks to help is through donations.

Medical supplies are at the top of the list when it comes to what is needed for disaster relief. Cox and St. John’s Hospitals are both lending a helping hand.

Cora Scott, a spokesperson for St. John’s, says the health system has started a relief fund for Haiti.

Cox and St. John’s also shipped pallets of emergency medical supplies through Convoy of Hope.

Stacy Fender, media relations coordinator for CoxHealth described some of the materials on their way to the devastated Caribbean nation.
