Fourth graders at Nixa’s Mathews Elementary are in the giving spirit this holiday season. KSMU's Gina Widger reports.

The kids in the comic book club called “The Hall of Heroes” came up with the idea to be superheroes in their community. They brought in clothes, food and toys to be given to those in need at the school and in the community. To promote reading they also wrote their own comics for families to enjoy over the holidays.

Chris Wilson is the sponsor for the club. He encouraged the kids to dress up as their favorite comic book hero for the day and he came to school dressed in a black cape and red tights.

"We're being superheroes in our own community. It's that idea of seeing what superheroes do in the stories that we read and then saying well how can we kind of be like that, how can we mimic that."

Rachel Lillard is in the comic book club and dressed up as the “Purple Tango”, a superhero she came up with herself.

"I donated lots of blankets, a bucket of toys and a lot of food."

Taylor Black was excited to tell what she donated and how it made her feel.

"Two bags of food, clothes, toys, basically anything. For other kids that might not have clothes, it's important for them maybe to have the feeling that we have."

Other superheroes in the club are Sophia Wilson, Heath Fusco and Noah McQuerter.

"I think it's very important that people get donations because I think about it as us out there hungry and starving to death."

"Well it actually makes me feel like a true hero."

"Some people don't really get a lot of stuff during Christmas time and they need stuff. They deserve to have as good as Christmas as we do."

The kids say they loved writing and drawing the comics, and that they hope it will encourage other kids in their school to read.
