Missouri State University President Dr. Michael Nietzel announced Monday that he will step down as president. In a statement released by the university, Nietzel said his reasons for stepping down were due to a combination of personal and professional concerns.

He informed the Board of Governors of his plans during an executive session of the regular meeting on Friday. Nietzel, 62, became the university’s ninth president on July 1, 2005.

He says he will be willing to remain in his position until the end of 2010 to allow the university to conduct a thorough search for his replacement. Nietzel said in the statement he does not have definite plans for after his d
eparture from MSU.

His contract entitles him to one semester of sabbatical at full pay or one year of sabbatical at half-pay. He also is a tenured faculty member in the Missouri State psychology department.

Also in the release, MSU’s Board of Governors Chair Brian Hammons said the university will now look to develop a plan for the search process of finding a new president.
