City Plans Alternative July 4th Events After Canceling Firefall Print E-mail

The economy is the culprit for ending a Springfield tradition that has lasted nearly three decades. KSMU’s Katie Easley reports.

The annual Fourth of July Firefall celebration has been cancelled for this year after budget cuts, says Jodie Adams, director of Parks and Recreation.

Adams says,“You know it really comes down to economics and it comes down to some reductions that had to be made through the budget process of the city of Springfield.”

Firefall was an all day fair that ended with a choreographed firework display while the Springfield Orchestra played along. Adams says the program has been cancelled indefinitely, but doesn’t rule out the possibility of it returning.

Adams says, “Someday we hope it can return, we would love for Firefall to return but again I think it’s just pretty tough economic times right now for the city of Springfield.”

The City of Springfield is instead planning various picnics over the holiday weekend, and a Fourth of July parade in Washington Park on North Summit Ave.
