Missouri State University President Michael Nietzel along with State Treasurer Sara Steelman unveiled a new scholarship program today. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

Missouri State University President Michael Nietzel along with State Treasurer Sara Steelman unveiled a new scholarship program today (Tuesday).

The university will provide six thousand dollars in need-based scholarships to families that invest in MOST, the state's college savings program.

Nietzel and Steelman made the announcement at the university's Child Development Center in front of an audience of about 20 pre-school children.

And some of the children took the podium to tell Treasurer Sara Steelman what they want to be when they grow up.

The MOST program allows taxpayers to deduct contributions of up to eight thousand dollars per year from state income taxes and earnings on MOST accounts are exempt from federal income taxes when used for higher education expenses.

To qualify for the new scholarships from Missouri State University, Missouri State president Michael Nietzel says families will need to participate in the MOST college savings program.

Nietzel says creating these scholarships will accomplish two goals.

Nietzel says it's important to provide opportunities to low income students.

He says this new scholarship program will provide some assistance.

The new scholarships from Missouri State University will be available beginning in the fall of 2007.
