Video Game Helps Students Learn Money Management

Listen in MP3 format It’s never too soon to start managing your money, and the NFL, along with a pair of big names in the credit card industry, are teamed up with the State Treasurer’s office Tuesday to improve financial literacy in Missouri schools. KSMU's Jamie Givens reports. State Treasurer Sarah Steelman joined St. Louis Rams’ kicker Josh Brown and representatives from VISA and Chase Card Services in Springfield to speak about the importance of financial stability and the unique way Missouri students can learn about it. “Financial Football” is an interactive money management video game with an NFL theme. Treasurer Steelman thinks it will score big with students across the state. “This is a way to make sure the kids understand the consequences of their actions, that they understand that they need to take control and manage their finances. And it’s something that will last them a lifetime because it’s so important to have that basic skill," Steelman said. Steelman says copies of this game have been distributed to every high school in the state. About fifty juniors and seniors from Glendale High School were on-hand Tuesday to listen to the speakers and preview the video game. The students each left with their own copy of the game. “We now have a financial literacy and economics credit requirement for high school kids to graduate from high school. They have to have half a credit of that kind of class. So, this fits in well with that new requirement," Steelman said. Steelman says the game will help students to better deal with issues they will likely face in the near future, such as student loans and credit card management. Missouri is one of nineteen states that have implemented this program in its high schools since 2006.
