Although you might not be aware, Thursday is a holiday. October 16^th is National Boss Day, a holiday created to show appreciation for none other than your boss. KSMU’s Kristian Kriner spoke with local employees as well as an expert on what constitutes a great boss.
 

The day before National Boss Day, we asked several Springfield residents about the best and worst things their employers had ever done to them.

 

While people may know what it takes to make a good employee-attitude, attendance and hard work—Elizabeth Rozell, a professor of management at Missouri State University, says one of the qualities of a great boss is empathy with his or her employees.

 

“When you really put yourself in someone else’s shoes then you can come up with better solutions to problems,” Rozell said.

 

She also says a good boss is quick to recognize his or her own strengths as well as weaknesses.

 

“That self understanding can help you recognize when you do need help with an area that is not your strong point. You can seek others to help you with that," Rozell said.

 

Other tips are to keep the communication lines open, give praise where praise is due and set a clear example.
