City Utilities is seeking council approval to raise natural gas rates by seven percent over a two year period. The first increase would take effect in April of next year. C-U General Manager John Twitty says the rate increase is the results of increased costs associated with maintaining the natural gas delivery system.

Some city council members still had some questions for C-U. Councilman Dan Chiles says a rate increase debate ought to include a discussion on how to reduce consumption of natural gas.

C-U officials say participation in energy efficiency programs has increased dramatically this year. C-U General Manager John Twitty says even with incentives like rebates, it's hard to get customers to embrace energy conservation.

Council is scheduled to take up the proposed rate hike September 15th for a public hearing.
