A new program can put a rebate in your hand and save you money on your energy bill, all while helping out the environment. The Department of Natural Resources Energy Center along with 8 Missouri utilities have joined together for the 2007 "Change A Light, Change The World" program. City Utilities in Springfield is one of the 8 Missouri utilities to participate. KSMU's Joe Morgan explains more about the program.

The purpose of the "Change A Light, Change The World" program is to provide customers a solution to lowering utility bills in addition to saving energy and protecting the environment. Cara Schaefer is in charge of conservation at City Utilities. She explains what's taking place locally.

Shaefer says that City Utilities is covering the rebate costs because energy conservation is something that it's been stressing to its customers. She also says the program is about educating people and trying to get them to do something new to help the environment.

The Department of Natural Resources says that an average household can save at least 60 dollars a year in energy costs in addition to protecting the environment. Schaefer explains the timetable for the program.
