With the winter months quickly approaching, flu season is just around the corner. And although you've probably had the flu before, you probably didn't know that over 36,000 people in the U.S. died from it every year. KSMU's Greg Leuthen reports on the importance of getting flu shots, including who needs them the most and the availability of the vaccinations.

A community coalition made up of all the major health care providers in Springfield wants to make sure that you avoid catching the flu this year. The group includes Cox Health, St. Johns, Doctor's Hospital, and the Greene County Medical Society and Health Department. That is why they are making flu shot vouchers available all next week.

Janice McCauley is the manager of Cox Health Senior Advantage. She explains that getting a flu shot is essential for several different types of people.

To receive a flu shot from the community coalition, you must obtain a voucher the week of October 15th through the 19th.

The voucher system has been used over the past couple of years to prevent people from waiting in line for hours only to discover that there are no more flu shots available.

McCauley explains why there have been shortages in the past, and why that has not been a problem yet this year.

McCauley explains when and where you can pick up a flu shot voucher.
