SMSU held the campus kick-off of its year long centennial celebration August 22nd, at the New Student Convocation.

Mike Smith hass the story:

At the New Student Convocation inside Hammons Student Center, SMSU President John Keiser, while reminding the audience of SMSU's statewided mission in public affairs, encouraged incoming freshmen to get involved in the community, and with one or more of the many campus organizations at SMS.

In the convocation's key note address, Don Landon, author of "Daring to Excel: The First Hundred Years of SMSU", told of the challenges, ethics, and accomplishments of former SMS students, teachers, and administrators including some whose names grace the front of acedemic and administrative buildings on campus. People like Clyde Hill, Roy Ellis, and Virginia Craig.

After the convocation, incoming freshmen made their way to the New Student Festival at Plaster Student Union where representatives from SMS student and departmental organizations were on hand to talk about the services they offer.

The SMSU Centennial Celebration continues through June 30th, 2005. The Official Community kick-off of the centennial will be September 10th-12th in conjuction with the Ozarks Celebration Festival.
