Listen in The Ozarks Celebration Festival will take place September 7th through 14th. In its tenth year, the Ozark Celebration Festival is expanding the celebration to eight days and includes more chances to experience what we love about the Ozarks. KSMU's Emily Nash tells us what new activities are in store this year for the festival. For ten years, the Ozarks Celebration Festival has helped remind and educate the Springfield community about the area's cultural roots This year, the festival expands from its traditional outdoor weekend festival, to an eight day celebration. Barb Jones is the director of special events for the Missouri State Department of College and Letters and the Ozarks Celebration Festival. She says the festival began ten years ago, to help inform Missouri State students about the historic culture of the Ozarks. The week kicks off with an outdoor concert by Big Smith and ice cream social on Friday September 7th. The annual crafts and music festival on Saturday September 8th and Sunday September 9th, will feature traditional craftspeople, artists, and five stages of Ozarks music, story telling and dancing. A new kids area will be set up at the outdoor fair with crafts, story tellers, and musicians. This year, the festival includes a guest lecture series from September 10th through 13th highlighting different historical aspects about the Ozarks. Jones says the Ozarks Celebration Festival will end on September 14th with an old time music concert, featuring 12 bands from all over the Ozarks.
